One Stop for Lumber & Hardware

When you purchase lumber from CA Lumber Recycling, you can also pick up the connectors, fasteners, finishes, and tools you need to complete the job. We stock a curated selection of hardware specifically chosen for compatibility with reclaimed and recycled wood — including stainless-steel fasteners that will not react with tannin-rich species, structural connectors rated for the loads reclaimed timbers can carry, and penetrating finishes formulated for dense old-growth grain.

Our hardware inventory is not intended to replace a full-service hardware store. Instead, we focus on the items that builders and woodworkers most frequently need when working with salvaged materials — and the specialty products that are hard to find elsewhere.

Stains, Sealants & Finishes

Penetrating Oil Finishes

Rubio Monocoat, Osmo, and WOCA hardwax oils that penetrate deep into dense reclaimed grain without building up a plastic-looking film on the surface. Zero-VOC and low-VOC formulas available for LEED and CALGreen compliance. Ideal for flooring, countertops, and furniture.

Exterior Sealants

UV-resistant penetrating sealants for reclaimed siding, decking, and outdoor timber frames. We carry Penofin, TWP (Total Wood Preservative), and Armstrong-Clark products formulated for dense, old-growth wood that resists absorption of conventional deck stains.

Wood Stains

Water-based and oil-based stains in a wide range of colors. We stock general-purpose stains as well as specialty products designed to even out color variation in mixed-lot reclaimed lumber — useful when matching boards from different salvage sources.

Clear Coats

Water-based polyurethane, conversion varnish, and shellac for interior applications. Multiple sheen levels from dead-flat to semi-gloss. We recommend water-based finishes for most reclaimed wood to avoid ambering of lighter species.

Epoxy & Fill

Two-part epoxy systems for filling checks, cracks, knot holes, and bolt holes in reclaimed timbers. Clear, tinted, and glow-in-the-dark formulas available. Also in stock: wood filler, burn-in sticks, and wax fill crayons for spot repairs.

Cleaners & Prep

Oxalic acid wood brightener for removing iron stains and tannin discoloration. TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) for heavy cleaning. Sanding sealers and conditioners for pre-stain preparation of blotch-prone species like Pine and Maple.

Specialty Tools

Working with reclaimed lumber often requires tools not found in a standard carpenter's kit. We stock the following specialty items:

Why Reclaimed Wood Needs Specialty Hardware

Reclaimed lumber behaves differently than new dimensional stock, and the hardware you use needs to account for those differences. Old-growth wood is denser, harder, and more chemically reactive than modern plantation lumber. The wrong fastener can split a board, stain the surface with rust within weeks, or fail prematurely under load. The right fastener — selected for the species, the application, and the expected service environment — will outlast the building itself.

The most common mistake we see from first-time reclaimed-lumber buyers is using standard galvanized fasteners on tannin-rich species like Oak, Redwood, and Cedar. The tannic acid in these woods reacts with the zinc coating on galvanized fasteners, creating dark stains around every nail and screw within the first year of service. These iron stains are essentially permanent — they cannot be sanded or bleached out without removing the surrounding wood. The fix is simple: use stainless steel, ceramic-coated, or copper fasteners instead. We stock all three.

The second common mistake is undersized structural connectors. Reclaimed timbers often carry heavier loads than new framing because their density allows for longer spans and larger spacing. The Simpson Strong-Tie or USP connector you would specify for a 2x10 plantation Doug Fir joist may not be appropriate for a 6x8 reclaimed Doug Fir beam carrying the same load. Our hardware staff can help you select connectors with the right capacity rating for old-growth structural members.

Fastener Selection by Species

Use the table below as a starting point for selecting the right fastener for your reclaimed wood project. The recommendations are based on chemical compatibility, structural capacity, and aesthetic considerations. When in doubt, default to stainless steel — it works with every species we sell.

Common Hardware Problems & Solutions

Iron Stains on Oak

Caused by zinc-plated or galvanized fasteners reacting with tannic acid. Switch to stainless or copper fasteners going forward. Treat existing stains by brushing on a 5% oxalic acid solution, allowing it to dwell for 15 minutes, and rinsing with clean water. Repeat if needed.

Splitting Around Screws

Caused by driving fasteners into dense old-growth wood without pilot holes. Pre-drill at 75-85% of the screw shank diameter for a snug fit, or 90% for a clearance hole. Use a self-centering Vix bit for trim work to prevent skating.

Loose Beam Connectors

Reclaimed timbers continue to dry slightly after installation, which can loosen lag bolts and through-bolts. Schedule a 6-month re-torque check on all major timber connections. Belleville washers help maintain preload as the wood moves.

Premature Deck Stain Failure

Caused by applying film-forming stains to dense reclaimed Redwood or Cedar. Switch to penetrating oil-based sealers (Penofin, TWP) that soak into the wood instead of forming a surface film. Sand or strip existing failed coatings first.

Stripped Screw Heads

Caused by underpowered drivers or wrong-size bits on dense wood. Use an impact driver (not a regular drill) for structural screws, and always use the manufacturer-specified bit. Star-drive (Torx) is more forgiving than Phillips.

Connector Corrosion

Caused by using non-galvanized connectors in damp or treated-wood applications. Replace with ZMAX-coated, hot-dip galvanized, or stainless connectors. Never use standard galvanized in contact with ACQ-treated lumber.
